One of the most exciting culinary scenes in Taiwan has got to be the night market gastronomic adventure. There are many night markets sprawling the major cities and choosing the one to visit can be a difficult task.
My godsister in Kaohsiung decided to bring us to the largest night market there and we started venturing and scouting for food. This place is called Liu He Night Market (六合夜市) and it has become very touristy over the past months as we were told by a local taxi driver on a later day.
After going around the night market, we settled for the fried oyster omelette (蚵仔煎). The oysters were quite fresh but the sweet sauce wasn't my kind of taste.
We also tried the oyster noodles in thick broth (蚵仔麵線) and this was quite nice, except that the portion of oysters was a bit pathetic as compared to those I saw on TV travel programmes.
We were brave enough to try out the stinky tofu as well but just after one piece, it already turned my stomach upside down! I still cannot accept this kind of food.
Luckily my mom bought some caramelised sweet potato and yum cubes to save my upturned stomach. These can make very good dessert too.
The best food I found at this night market has got to be the pepper pie (胡椒餅). This stall was even endorsed by the current President of Taiwan. The crust was crispy and the meat filling inside was moist and full of the pepper flavour. I bought only one piece but I should have bought more!
