Oxford: Afternoon Tea at the Quod

It is not hard to imagine why this place is called the Quod (I have mistaken "QUOD" as "QUAD" initially until a reader pointed out my mistake, but my wild guess is that "QUOD" was derived from "QUAD"), as there are many quadrangles of the colleges scattering around Oxford. However, it is not a place for studying, but a place to satisfy your taste palette.

I missed my lunch in Oxford because I spent too much time on the Addison's Walk at Magdalen College looking for the exit at the other end which happened to be closed. In addition to that, I wanted to spend more time at the Christ Church College as it was only open at 2 p.m. It was already past four o'clock in the afternoon after I was satisfied with my sightseeing, so naturally I chose to go for afternoon tea instead of a main for lunch.

The Quod is highly recommended for afternoon tea by my Lonely Planet travel guide book, so there was no question about choosing this place to fill my really empty stomach.

I chose a table by the window and started watching the patrons of the restaurant. Unlike myself, most of them were just there for the drinks as it was already past 4 p.m.

As I was extremely hungry, I put made my order immediately without even looking at the menu.

An afternoon tea is not an afternoon tea without tea, obviously! So I was obliged to have a pot, and I chose earl grey.

I was quite satisfied with the concoction of pastry when the food was served, despite the fact that the sandwich with crab-meat spread that I wanted was sold out. I settled for the ones with egg spread and they were good as well.

The scones with the soft butter were already very good, but not until I ate the custard muffin that I found something that tasted divine! As for the eclair and the double chocolate cake, there is nothing to shout about.

The total damage was £11.50, quite reasonable by the living standard in the U.K. but considered expensive for a poor Asian like me.

Nice looking place! Why does the menu say "QUOD"? Is that British for QUAD? Too bad about the double chocolate cake, it sure looks good in the photo!

Oops! That was my mistake about the "QUOD" and "QUAD"! Perhaps I had been to too many quadranges until I was too into the word "QUAD". Haha! However, from my wild guess, "QUOD" was derived from "QUAD".
