Having Belly is Lucky

The Lucky Belly is a Chinese-Japanese fusion restaurant located at the Chinatown of Honolulu. As the name and the signboard suggest, this restaurant specialises in pork belly. Therefore, any dish with pork belly should be one of their signature dishes.

The "Pork Belly Bao" was highly recommended when I checked online, so I ordered this appetiser with sake hoisin sauce and pickled cucumber. The set of three buns was filled with a slice of braised pork belly meat and a piece of pickled cucumber in each cut steamed bun. The concoction of the pork belly-filled bun and the hoisin sauce in the mouth was really flavourful, not to mention the additional crunchiness from the pickled cucumber. Any pork belly lover will like this.

For the main dish, I ordered something called the "Belly Bowl" which is under the ramen section. It was Japanese ramen with a touch of the Chinese pork belly, bacon and sausage. The soup tasted like the Japanese pork-bone broth. The pork belly meat was the same as the one in the "Pork Belly Bao" and both the pork bacon and sausage added some smoky flavour. This should suit those who love everything about pork.

If you are in Honolulu, I would recommend that you give it a try if you like pork. The amalgamation of Chinese and Japanese cuisines really gives a special touch on the food served.
